In this project we set out to investigate the functional role of neuronal organization patterns across different brain states in sleep and wakefulness. During different brain states the neo-cortex and the hippocampus exhibit marked transitions in population patterns, the function of which is still not understood. To address this question we take a unique approach motivated by the notion that to understanding cortical computations we need to study simpler cortical systems. We therefor set to investigate the ancestral cortex of reptiles which is the closest to the first cortex appearing in evolution. We focus on bearded dragons as a model system. The brains of these animals exhibit very organized transitions between states during sleep and wakefulness. We will study the organization and function of these transitions by employing in-vivo electrophysiology, quantitative behavioral analysis and new behavioral paradigms.
