Rat navigation strategies in real-world conditions.
Animals’ navigation skills are mostly explored today using either laboratory animals in lab conditions, or wild ones with unknown histories. In my project I attempt to draw on the best of both worlds by housing wild rats in an open, outdoor colony, carrying a miniature GPS device. A free-roaming phase, followed by a translocation task where the rats will be released in an unfamiliar location, will allow us to learn about their home range, travel habits and navigation strategies.
