Research title
Astrocyte senescence in aging and neurodegenerative diseases

Research project

Aging is the most prominent risk factor of many neurodegenerative diseases and there is a wide consensus suggesting that most, if not all, neurodegenerative diseases share common mechanisms. One possible mechanism is cellular senescence (CS). Astrocytes are the most prevalent cells in the human brain and have an enormous role in the maintenance of the neural environment. Moreover, astrocytes have been shown to have prominent effects in brain cognition. Astrocyte senescence was already shown to play a role in AD and ALS.

I am interested in understanding the mechanisms leading to astrocyte senescence and potential ways to prevent astrocytes to enter senescence.
