Research title
The time course of the synaptic response and its effect on the reliability of neural coding

Research project

Signal propagation and processing involves a great deal of inter-related processes such as the pre-synaptic calcium influx, vesicular release, and NT binding.
Each of these processes operates with its own characteristic time course and state dependencies, leading to a rather noisy and chaotic system.
Our study attempts to determine how these intrinsic characteristics of the system relate to the way in which it processes information.
At first, we will create a model mimicking the essential aspects of the neural response which may affect the temporal characteristics of a signal, and use the results to gain insights into the possible underlying mechanisms at the synapse level, and the various limitations on information processing which arise from the systems characteristics.
