Understanding cortical computation: Visual processing in ancestral three layered cortex

Position title

In this project we will address the fundamental question of which computations does the cortex employ. This question remains a mystery despite many decades of intensive research. To address it we will take an alternative approach: Instead of studying the complex 6 layered cortex of mammals, we will look for the answer in the smaller and simpler cortex of reptiles which is more similar to the cortex of the stem amniote – the ancestor of mammals, reptiles and birds. We will address this question using a methodology we recently developed allowing to record hundreds to thousands of neurons from the entire area of this cortex (Shein-Idelson et al 2017, Nat. Meth.).

Job description

We are looking for outstanding, highly motivated and scientifically curious PhD students or postdocs to fill two positions in the lab employing different but complementary experimental approaches:
1) In-vivo and ex-vivo large scale electrophysiology in combination with intracellular recordings.
2) Big data, signal processing, latent variable modelling, computational modeling.
