The tremendous advancement in genetic studies helped to identify the involvement of many genes in the etiology of autism and epilepsy. Indeed, mutations in multiple types of voltage-gated sodium channels (Nav) channels were identified in patients. In order to understand how genetic mutations in ion channels lead to altered behavior, we use mouse models that mimic the human genetic mutation and explore perturbations of neuronal function on cellular, network and behaving animal levels.
